Charlie Glenn of the Beech Creek community plays a banjo he built in his shop. Glenn started learning to build instruments from the late Stanley Hicks.
Since Glenn's customers are experienced players, he lets them pick out their own woods and designs. With an idea of what the customer wants, he adds extra inlays and designs on the head.
Glenn says that carving and whittling is to "leave your knife make." Adding a personal touch still shows that is a hand-built instrument.
